The establishment of the Institute of Automotive Engineering and Design in 2024 is connected with the Department of Machine Parts and the Department of Automobiles, Ships, and Internal Combustion Engines, which evolved over the years as follows:
-
1941: III Institute of Machine Construction
-
1941: Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
-
1945: Institute of Machine Parts and Lifting Equipment
-
1946: Institute of Internal Combustion Engines
-
1951: Department of Machine Parts
-
1960: Department of Internal Combustion Engines and Ships
-
1999: Department of Automobiles, Ships, and Internal Combustion Engines
-
2007: Institute of Transport Engineering and Design
-
2024: Institute of Automotive Engineering and Design
The Institute of Automotive Engineering and Design continues the tradition of one of the oldest scientific and educational workplaces at today’s Slovak University of Technology (STU) — the III Institute of Machine Construction, where in 1941 the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was opened. In 1945, the Institute of Machine Parts and Lifting Equipment was established, which was renamed in 1951 as the Department of Machine Parts. In 1946, the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines was established, renamed in 1950 as the Department of Internal Combustion Engines and other Thermal Machines. After the detachment of related workplaces, this department was renamed the Department of Transport with a focus expanded to ship construction. From 1960 until 1999, it was known as the Department of Internal Combustion Engines and Ships. Since autumn 1999, it was named the Department of Automobiles, Ships, and Internal Combustion Engines. By merging the Department of Automobiles, Ships, and Internal Combustion Engines and the Department of Machine Parts in 2007, the Institute of Transport Engineering and Design (ÚDTK) was founded.
